"Beating Heart" is a single by English recording artist Ellie Goulding from Divergent: (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) (2014). The song was for the 2014 science-fiction film 'Divergent'. It was released on February 24, 2014 in the US and Canada as a single and will be released internationally on 23 May 2014 as the second single from the album.

The song was later added to the 2014 re-release of Halcyon Days.

Background & DevelopmentEdit

On January the 22nd, on Good Morning America, Goulding revealed that she'd be contributing a whole lot to the film's soundtrack.

“I wrote a song for 'Divergent,' called 'Beating Heart,' and it's being used for the soundtrack,” she said.

"We started working on the film with songs from Ellie Goulding's album Halcyon and soon found that the texture of her music and the tone of her voice matched perfectly with our film." "In many ways Ellie has become the inner voice of our heroine Tris." [1]

—film director Neil Burger said in a release about the soundtrack album.

Goulding added that she recorded instrumental tracks with orchestral accompaniment and that the music they made will definitely surprise both her fans and Initiates alike ... both in the way it sounds, and the way it will be featured in the film. [2]

"I basically got to go into the studio, and just be put in front of the microphone for a few hours and sing whatever I wanted to sing," "Not even words, noises and sounds, too."

—Goulding told MTV News.

Director Neil Burger said in a press release that Goulding’s vocals are an extension of the film’s lead female character Tris, played by Shailene Woodley. [3]

Goulding also contributed vocals to the film's score, composed by electronic artist Junkie XL with the assistance of executive producer Hans Zimmer. [4]

North Americans can pre-order Divergent: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack bundles that include the soundtrack on 12-inch picture-disc vinyl and a poster with names of fans who order, beginning Jan. 24. [5]

The song officially made its premier on BBC Radio 1 on the 24th of February.

Release and promotionEdit

A lyric video for "Beating Heart" premiered on the Entertainment Weekly website on 24 February 2014, featuring scenes from Divergent.[6][7] That same day, the song debuted on BBC Radio 1 as Zane Lowe's Hottest Record.[8][9][10] On 25 February, the track was made available for pre-order as part of the Divergent soundtrack album on iTunes in North America.[11] "Beating Heart" was officially sent to contemporary hit radio stations in the United States on 22 April 2014.[12]

Goulding appeared on the NBC morning television show Today on 12 March 2014 to perform an acoustic version of the song.[13] On 13 April, Goulding performed "Beating Heart" at the 2014 MTV Movie Awards, followed by a performance of Zedd's song "Find You"—also from the Divergent soundtrack—featuring Matthew Koma and Miriam Bryant.[14] She also performed the song on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on 15 April.[15]

LyricsEdit

Eyes make their peace in difficulties
With wounded lips and salted cheeks
And finally we step to leave to the departure lounge of disbelief

And I don't know where I'm going
But I know it's gonna be a long time
And I'll be leaving in the morning
Come the white wine bitter to sunlight

Wanna hear your beating heart tonight
Before the bleeding sun comes alive
I want to make the best of what is left hold tight
And hear my beating heart one last time
Before daylight

And the canyon underneath the trees
Behind the dark sky you looked at me
I fell for you like autumn leaves
And never faded ever green
And I don't know where I'm going
But I know it's gonna be a long time
Cause I'll be leaving in the morning
Come white wine bitter to sunlight

Wanna hear your beating heart tonight
Before that bleeding sun comes alive
I want to make the best of what is left hold tight
And hear my beating heart one last time

I can't face this now
Everything's changed
I just wanna be by your side
Here's hoping we collide
Here's hoping we collide
Here's hoping we collide

Want to hear your beating heart tonight
Before the bleeding sun comes alive
I want to make the best of what is left hold tight
And hear my beating heart one last time

Want to hear your beating heart

SynopsisEdit

The music video shows Goulding doing her aptitude test. The video begins with Goulding standing in a dark room drinking a liquid similar to the simulation serum in the story and sees herself in a simulation, where she is in a misty forest. She meets a mysterious boy in the forest and as she turns to walk away she is pulled closer to him. The simulation ends and Goulding is seen standing in the same dark room. Following the release of the video, an interview occurred live on MTV.com where Goulding, Shailene Woodley and Theo James discussed Divergent. The music was made available to watch exclusively for 24 hours on MTV.com after the video premiered.[18][19] [20]

"Beating Heart' is about being away from someone or knowing that you're always going to have to be apart from someone that you really love, And it's painful, but it's hopeful because there's always a chance that they'll collide again like two people collide. Like the universe will bring them back together. I think the song is basically that. Sort of relying on the fact that if you're meant to be drawn back together you will be."

—Goulding told MTV News
