Background & DevelopmentEdit
On January the 22nd, on Good Morning America, Goulding revealed that she'd be contributing a whole lot to the film's soundtrack.
“I wrote a song for 'Divergent,' called 'Beating Heart,' and it's being used for the soundtrack,” she said.
"We started working on the film with songs from Ellie Goulding's album Halcyon and soon found that the texture of her music and the tone of her voice matched perfectly with our film." "In many ways Ellie has become the inner voice of our heroine Tris."
—film director Neil Burger said in a release about the soundtrack album.
Goulding added that she recorded instrumental tracks with orchestral accompaniment and that the music they made will definitely surprise both her fans and Initiates alike ... both in the way it sounds, and the way it will be featured in the film.
"I basically got to go into the studio, and just be put in front of the microphone for a few hours and sing whatever I wanted to sing," "Not even words, noises and sounds, too."
—Goulding told MTV News.
Director Neil Burger said in a press release that Goulding’s vocals are an extension of the film’s lead female character Tris, played by Shailene Woodley.
Goulding also contributed vocals to the film's score, composed by electronic artist Junkie XL with the assistance of executive producer Hans Zimmer.

"Beating Heart' is about being away from someone or knowing that you're always going to have to be apart from someone that you really love, And it's painful, but it's hopeful because there's always a chance that they'll collide again like two people collide. Like the universe will bring them back together. I think the song is basically that. Sort of relying on the fact that if you're meant to be drawn back together you will be."
